When most people think of who created dogecoin, they think of Bitcoin (BTC) and Dogecoin. The canine-themed cryptocurrency was created as a joke and is now worth billions of dollars. But who created dogecoin, and why did it become so popular?
The creators of Dogecoin, software engineers Jackson Palmer and Billy Markus, hoped that their creation would poke fun at the wild speculation in cryptocurrencies. They based the coin on an image of Shiba Inu dogs that had been popularized in the internet meme known as Doge.
After the launch of Dogecoin in 2013, it quickly became a success on social media sites like Reddit, where it was used for “tipping” users. The cryptocurrency also gained popularity when Elon Musk, founder of Tesla and SpaceX, started tweeting about it, leading to its price skyrocketing. Other celebrities, such as Snoop Dogg, followed suit, which further drove up the price of the currency.
Despite its origins as a joke, Dogecoin has been able to maintain a healthy price and is considered one of the most fun cryptocurrencies out there. The coin has also branched out and is now used for charitable endeavors, led by the Dogecoin Foundation.
But despite this, not everyone understands why the cryptocurrency has become so popular. Palmer himself has washed his hands of it, saying that the coin’s skyrocketing price in 2018 was a sign that the crypto market is overheated. He has since retired from the project and now works as an engineer at an education company in California.
