Pirates like Blackbeard cultivated their image in order to strike fear into the hearts of other sailors. They would wrap slow-burning lighted coils around their heads and beards, swagger about with swords in hand, and brandish spears to intimidate other pirates. But the image they portrayed on their flags was just as important.

Blackbeard’s personal flag featured a horned skeleton holding an hourglass in one hand and a spear piercing a heart that was dripping three drops of blood in the other. This imagery is a popular depiction of Blackbeard’s pirate flag, but it does not appear in any contemporary record. The first time this image was attributed to Blackbeard was in 1978 upon the publication of a popular Time-Life book.
While it is not clear what Blackbeard’s actual flag looked like, we do know that his ship was adorned with the Jolly Roger flag, which is well-known thanks to R. M. Ballantyne’s 1858 novel The Coral Island and Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island, published as a serial in 1881 and then as a book in 1883. That flag is now regarded as the most famous pirate symbol in the world and it is believed that Blackbeard used a Jolly Roger flag.
